Packing Up and A Visit

Orange City, FL.
49 deg. overcast, NE wind @ 14 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 61 deg. mostly cloudy, N. wind @ 10 to 15 mph w/18 mph gusts.

It was a little before 9:00 yesterday morning when Jim went out and started getting things put away and packed up for my departure tomorrow morning. Why did he do that on Saturday, being that we won't be leaving until Monday, you ask? "Uggh!!"

Well, Jim was watching the weather reports for this weekend, and he realized that there were showers and t-storms headed this way for yesterday afternoon, and that was to be followed by a cold front which would bring much colder temperatures and wind for today. So........he decided to do as much as he could yesterday morning, before the rain started. :-) "Grrrr!!"

He took the front wheel off of his bike and put it and the bike into the back of CLT, (Cute Little Truck), put away all the lawn chairs, checked under me for any items he had stored under there, took the clothes rack off of my ladder and stored it in my basement, filled my fresh water tank and put away the water filter and water hoses, and checked the air in my tires and my fluid levels. Whew!!!

Later on today, he'll roll up my window awnings, engage the travel locks on my main awning, dump my tanks and put away the sewer hose. "Akkk!!"

Then, I'll be ready to TRAVEL!!!!!

Laura and Ashley stopped by for awhile yesterday afternoon. No special reason, they just wanted to spend some time with Linda and Jim before we leave. They mostly just talked and then Linda showed them some stuff from her Family Tree program. "Arrrrgggg!!!!"

OH, and my itchy tire condition? "Akkkkk!!!" I don't want to talk about it!!!!

Did you know that on this date in 1949 the first Soap Opera appeared on TV? It was on NBC and it was called, "These Are My Children", was shown at 5:00 on weekdays and each episode was only 15 minutes long.

Starting To Get Ready, Groceries, and Olive Garden

Orange City, FL.
61 deg. mostly cloudy, no wind.
Forecast today = high temp. 77 deg. cloudy, 50% chance of showers and t-storms, SW wind @ 10 to 15 mph with 25 mph gusts.

I didn't post yesterday because there wasn't anything to write about, and there's still not much today.

Jim and Linda have been starting to get me ready to head to Thonotosassa Monday. Jim has been working on outside stuff, and Linda inside, although Jim did go through a large stack of magazines and papers that had accumulated over the 2 1/2 months that we've been here.

Yesterday, they took CLT and headed to the Publix grocery store and came back with a whole bunch of groceries. Again, I think they bought too much as they had trouble finding room for everything in my cabinets and fridge. Then, right after they finished putting everything away, Laura called and they made plans to meet her and Lindsey at the Olive Garden Restaurant for Dinner.

After they got back from having a very good meal and great conversation with Laura and Lindsey, they both took little naps and then watched TV until bedtime.

I'll bet you're wondering about my itchy tire condition? ..... Thank you for asking. All of my tires are itching now, and it seems to be getting worse every day. :-( If it progresses like it has in the past, I'll be really miserable by tomorrow, and then it will be almost unbearable by the time we leave here Monday. Don't worry though, soon after we get out on the road, it will start to go away, and by the time we get down to Thonotosassa, it'll be gone! :-)

A Major Reorganization

Orange City, FL.
38 deg. clear, no wind.
Forecast today = high temp. 70 deg. mostly sunny, NE. wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

It tuned out to be a real purdy day yesterday. Lots of sunshine, light winds, and temperatures around 68 deg. So.....Jim decided to give the reorganization of my basement compartments one last shot before we leave here.

Folks, he had tote boxes, lawn chairs, hoses, parts, and supplies setting everywhere!!! I didn't think he'd ever get it all back in!!! But,....... he did, and now my whole basement is much more organized with similar things next to each other, rather than scattered around in different compartments.

Now when I need a new bulb for one of my clearance lights, he'll know which compartment it's in and won't have to dig through my whole basement to find it. Or, like the last time I needed one, he went to the auto parts store and bought one, because it was just too much trouble to find the ones that he already had somewhere down there. :-o

While Jim was doing that, Linda just stayed out of the way, (You don't want to get in Jim's way when he's in the middle of a big project like that), and did some more family tree research and added some more recipes to her database.

For dinner, Jim cooked a couple of burgers on the grill and Linda cooked some cauliflower on my stove. Then they did their usual things, TV, computers and reading until bedtime.

Where Did The Day Go? and Insurance

Orange City, FL.
39 deg. clear, no wind.
Forecast today = high temp. 67 deg. sunny, W. wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

Hmmmmm!! What to write about?

Yesterday was one of those days when nothing really happened, but it seemed like Jim and Linda were busy doing something all day. And, at the end of the day you wonder, "Where did the day go?"

It was pretty chilly in the morning, so Jim didn't go outside until about 10:00, and then he didn't stay out there too long. After Linda got up, she was sorting papers and trying to get stuff filed away, and then in the afternoon, she called the lady, (Gina Shaver), who used to be my insurance agent. I say "used to" because about a year and a half ago, she left the agency she had been with and, along with another agent, started her own agency called EPIC Insurance Inc. http://www.epic-ins.com/index.html

The reason for all of this was that since she left, and a new agent was assigned to my policy, neither Jim or Linda have been really happy with his service. It was OK, but just not the friendly and personal service they had gotten from Gina.

Now, for those of you who know of Nick Russell and either follow his blog or read his Gypsy Journal newspaper, http://www.gypsyjournal.net/ you know that after a break in of his Motor Home, he had a whole lot of problems with his insurance company. Well, I have that same insurance company and Jim wanted to check with Gina, and see what she thought about switching to a new company. Gina knew about Nick's problems and said that she thought it was more his agent's fault, and that for the most part, her customers had received good service from the company. Then, she said she would check with the other Insurance Companies that she works with and see what kind of a price she could get on a policy for me with them.

Well, in about an hour, Gina called back and said that being that I had been with National Interstate for quite awhile, and I have a decreasing deductible with them, she could not find anything with as good of a price. She also assured Jim that if I had any problems with a claim, she would be sure to do her best to help.

So, I have Gina for my agent again, and I feel much better about the whole insurance thing with National Interstate. I really do believe that she would do anything she could to help me if I had an accident.

If any of you are looking for an agent, you might want to contact Gina. She's supper friendly and very knowledgeable about RV and Full-timer's Insurance, and will do her best to find a policy with a company that's best for you.

By the time Jim and Linda had everything lined up with the insurance, it was almost time to eat, so Linda dug some left-overs out of my fridge, heated them up and made some garlic bread to go with them for dinner.

That garlic bread always smells so good. ;-)

Then it was TV, computers and reading until bedtime.

Brrrr! My Condition and Laura And Ashley Stop By

Orange City, FL.
43 deg. clear, light W. breeze.
Fore cast today = high temp. 68 deg. sunny, W. wind @ 10 to 15 mph.

Brrrrr!! I wish the temperature would decide what it wanted to do down here in FL. It's about 15 degrees colder today than it was yesterday at this time. I can't remember any other winters down here where the temperatures fluxuated so much.

Besides having to deal with the temperatures, my itchy tire condition is really getting bad. I know I've talked about this before, but it seems like the closer we get to our departure date the worse the condition gets! I don't know how it is with other Motor homes, but mine usually starts with one tire and then gradually spreads to all the rest. Then during the last few days before we go, they all itch!!!!

Right after lunch, Jim and Linda took CLT (Cute Little Truck), and went over to Wally World to purchase a few things. They weren't gone very long, so I guess they found what they needed right away. As they were pulling into CLT's parking spot next to me, the phone rang and it was Laura, saying that she was out and about and would like to stop by for awhile.

So.... in a little while, she pulled up beside CLT and came in to visit. Soon after Laura got here, Ashley pulled up too. You see, she had talked to Laura on the phone and found out that she was coming over here, so she decided to "pop by" too!

What a great surprise! :-)

They were here until about 4:00 and after they left, Jim and Linda started trying to figure out what they were going to do for their evening meal. Well, it was decided that they'd head over to Arby's to get a sandwich, since they couldn't come up with anything else that sounded good. When they got back, they watched TV until it was time to go to bed.

Not a terribly exciting day, but it was a very good one. ;-)

Did you know that today is National Peanut Brittle Day?

Oh Oh, Now my condition has spread to my left front tire!!! :-(

Morning Storms and Jim Update

Orange City, FL.
57 deg. cloudy, light rain.
Forecast today = High temp. 75 deg. rain and t-storms this morning, becoming partly sunny this afternoon with W. winds @ 15 to 20 mph.

Well, that was interesting!! It's 6:45 in the morning and we just had a pretty severe storm go through here with tornado warnings in the area. For just a few minutes, it rained really hard and we had some pretty strong wind gusts, but by the radar, any severe weather is past us now.

Jim is still doing fine. He has started watching real close what kind of fuel he's feeding himself and has been trying to get a little exercise. He rode his bike around the park yesterday, (which he hadn't been doing lately), and walked some. From that stress test that he took at the hospital, he realized just how out of shape he has become, and is going to try to remedy the problem. I don't know how much good his bike ride did though, a good part of yesterday was spent sitting on the couch and watching 2 football game on TV.

I don't think there are any real plans for today. I think Laura is off work today, so maybe she'll stop by. Jim has a few things he wants to pick up at a store, so maybe he and Linda will do that.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Doing "Things" and A Wake-Up Call

Orange City, FL.
66 deg. cloudy, no wind.
Forecast today = high temp. 79 deg., partly sunny, breezy with winds out of the SE @ 15 to 20 mph. A 40% chance of t-storms tonight.

Everything is going well with Jim. He did a few things around here yesterday, like help Linda clean out her clothes closet. And, while they were doing that, both Linda and Jim got rid of some of the never used clothes that were hanging in their closets and taking up space. (Most of that clothes is now in bags in the back of CLT waiting to be taken to Good-Will). :-) He also rolled out my main awning so he could spend some time outside enjoying the great weather we're having. Oh, and he helped Linda carry out laundry to hang on the clothes rack that is fastened to my ladder and took a couple of bags of garbage down to the dumpster on his bike.

After they hung the clothes on the rack, they both sat outside under my awning and talked. This whole thing with Jim has really been a wake-up call for both of them. Getting sick or dieing is not something you really want to think too much about, but this really brought it to the surface and made both of them stop and think about what would happen if one of them dies or gets very sick. It made them think about what they would do or where would they go if they lost the love of their life. Would they continue Full-timing? Would they park me and live in me? Would they sell me and buy a park model RV or rent a condo?

The questions go on and on, and it's really something every Full-timer out there should think about and talk about with their spouses and/or family. It's not a pleasant subject, but it needs to be addressed.

Things happen all of a sudden and it pays to have some idea of what you would do if the worst was to happen.

On a brighter note, Jim wants to thank all the people who contacted him or Linda to wish him well. This was a scary and difficult time and knowing that loved ones and friends were pulling for him helped tremendously.

You Never Know and Home Alone

Orange City, FL.
52 deg. clear, no wind
Forecast today= high temp. 74 deg. partly sunny, E. wind @ 50 to 10 mph.

Well!!!! You just never know what is going to happen, and we sure had something happen around here!!!

It all started about a week ago when Jim was carrying groceries in to me from CLT. Just as he got to the top of my stairs, he all of a sudden got feeling really bad and had to sit down real quick because he was afraid that he was going to pass out. He sat for awhile and everything went back to normal, so he continued to bring in the groceries.

It scared him though.

Then, in the next days, he still didn't feel very well from time to time, but it wasn't anything like that first day. Then, Thursday morning, he woke up feeling bad and it didn't seem to get any better. He had this strange feeling in his upper abdomen / lower chest, and he was shaking.

Of course by this time, he was starting to think there might be something wrong with his heart!

Well, he woke Linda up and they decided to call Laura and ask her to come over. Now of course Laura is not a doctor, but she is a Registered Nurse with quite a bit of experience, and Jim really values her knowledge. Well, when she got here, it was decided that Jim should go to the emergency room at the hospital here in Orange City. So, they all loaded up in Laura's car and she took them over there.

Then, (as far as Jim is concerned), the "fun" began. they tested prodded, took some of his vital fluids, and ran all kinds of tests, like EKG's, pressure tests, and they even took a movie of his heart! Now, all of these test turned out OK, so Jim and Linda were feeling a little better, but there was one more test that needed to be run.

It was the dreaded "stress test", and the soonest it could be done, was Friday afternoon. So, Jim had to stay at the hospital overnight. (I think they wanted to keep him there for observation too, as they had him hooked up to a heart monitor the whole time).

So, being that Jim was going to have to stay overnight, Laura brought Linda back here to stay with me. Now, this was something new for Linda. She had never stayed home alone overnight in me before, and in fact, she and Jim had not been apart for even one night since they had begun full-timing way back in 2001!! And, this is the first time that either of them had slept in anything but a MH bed since that time either, so it was strange for Jim too!!

OK, back to the hospital thing. About 10:30 yesterday morning, Laura came over and picked up Linda and took her back over to the hospital. (She couldn't stay because he had other commitments). Then it was the "waiting game" with nurses coming in to check Jim's pressure, his operating temperature and taking more samples of his vital fluids. Then, finally it was time for "the test"!!

Jim says that if you don't feel bad when you start the test, the test will surely make you feel like you are going to die before they finally shut that treadmill off!! Then, he had to quickly get back on a bed so they could take another movie of his heart to see how it acted under stress!!

OK now I can here you saying, "OK Myrddin, get on with it!! What were the results of the test???"

Well, I'm happy to say that it looks like Jim and Linda will continue to travel, and they will be my owners for quite a while yet. :-) Jim passed all the test, and by about 8:30 last night, Jim and Linda were back here relaxing and watching my TV.

So... what was wrong with Jim to make him feel bad? We still don't know for sure, but Jim has always had some problems with his stomach and now they're thinking that it may have had something to do with that, or maybe an anxiety attack. (Or both).

Jim is going to be very careful of what he eats, and we'll go from there. If he starts feeling bad again, he'll need to see another doctor. Hopefully he'll feel alright, cause he really doesn't like doctors much. ;-)

Did you know that according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were approximately 7,569 hospitals in the United States in 2005?

Good to have you back, Jim. :-)

A Beautiful Day and A Return To Perkins

Orange City, FL.
43 deg. clear, no wind.
Forecast today = high temp. 77 deg. mostly sunny, SW wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

It twas a beautiful day yesterday, with temperatures in the low 70's and mostly sunny skies. Today promises to be even nicer with still warmer temperatures and tomorrow they're saying on TV that it may get up to 80!

Ahhhh!! This is what Florida weather should be like!!! :-)

After it warmed up from the morning low in the 40's, Jim did a bunch of little stuff outside. One of those was lubricating the roller tubes on my window awnings. They were starting to squeak a lot when they were rolled up or down. Another was to lube his bike chain and controls as it has been setting outside in the weather and needed some TLC. He also talked to the neighbors, took a nap and took Lind out to eat. (More on that in a minute).

While Jim was doing his thing, Linda was reading, working on her family tree program, and did some desk work. Oh, and I think she also dozed off for a little while too.

Now, back to taking Linda out to eat.

All of my regular readers will remember the bad experience that Jim and Linda had at the local Orange City Perkins restaurant on the 27th of December. They will also remember that when Jim posted a complaint on Perkins web site, he got a very quick response from the manager of that restaurant, offering apologies and an invitation to come in and receive a free meal. Well, last night, Jim and Linda decided to go back to the restaurant and give them another try. I'm glad to tell you that it was a very good experience and when they asked to see Chris (the manager), as he had told them to do, he welcomed them to the restaurant, apologized again, and told them that they should order anything they wanted from the menu and he would pay for it.

Now, I'm sure the waitress was aware of the situation, and they got some extra attention, but the service was excellent and so was the food, and Jim and Linda came away from the restaurant with a very good feeling and I'm sure they'll go back again.

It's nice to know that there are still businesses out there that value their customers. Perkins couldn't have handled the situation any better.

A Little Maintenance, A Little Repair, and It's Back!

Orange City, FL.
45 deg. clear, W. wind @ 5 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 71 deg. mostly sunny, NW wind @ 5 mph.

Sunday was a very windy day here in Orange City. There were gusts up to 35 or 40 mph at times, so it really wasn't too nice outside. Yesterday wasn't so windy, but the temperatures refused to get out the mid 60's, so with the wind that was blowing, it felt pretty cool.

So, Jim decided to try to get a few things done inside of me. The first thing he did was remove my air conditioner filters, (they're the foam type), and wash them out and hang them on the clothes rack to dry. Then he tackled the fluorescent ceiling light in my bathroom to try to find out what was making it go off and come back on when it was being used. Once he found the problem, it was just a quick and easy fix to repair a loose connection. ;-)

By the time he was done with the light, the filters were dry and he reinstalled them after checking to make sure that everything was OK in the duct area above them.

While he was doing this, Linda was washing some clothes and adding some information to her family tree program that she had found on the Internet. Then after she and Jim both took naps, she made some spaghetti and garlic bread for dinner.

Sure smelled good! :-)

So...... Another real exciting day here in Orange City. I don't know if I can stand much more of this. ;-0 I'm glad that we'll be leaving here in a couple of weeks and even though I really enjoy being this close to Laura's and being able to see her from time to time, but it's time to get out of here for awhile. In fact yesterday, I thought that there was a squirrel crawling around on my left rear tires, but after checking, I realized that it was actually my itchy tire condition that was coming back!

Oh Wow!!! 2 weeks before we're going to leave and my tires are starting to itch already!!! This may be a long 2 weeks for me!!! ;-(

E-mail From Big Herb

Orange City, FL.
67 deg. cloudy, no wind.
Forecast today = high temp. 75 deg, becoming partly cloudy this afternoon, breezy with SW winds @ 15 to 20 mph.

It rained off and on all day yesterday. The wind started picking up around noon, so Jim rolled up all my awnings as they were forecasting strong winds with gusts up to 50 mph in the approaching storms. I don't think we ever had winds anywhere near 50 mph, but it did get pretty breezy at times.

Do you remember me telling you the other day about the sink holes that are occurring down here in FL? Well, Jim got an e-mail from my friend, Big Herb, (Roland and Louise's Winnebago Journey MH), and he's in Frostproof where they have the huge sink hole that is about 1/2 the size of a football field. Come to find out, it is only about 150 yards from where he is parked in the Southern Pines Resort!! In the e-mail, he said that it's real scary being that close, and I'm sure if it gets any larger, Roland and Louise will be getting him out of there.

A Slow But Beautiful Day

Orange City, FL.
62 deg. cloudy, sprinkles, NE wind @ 6 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 77 deg. cloudy, periods of rain, SE wind @ 10 to 15 mph. 90% chance of t-storms tonight.

Another slow but beautiful day yesterday. The weather was just about ideal and a lot of people here in the park took advantage of it and were busy with all kinds of projects that had been put off. Jim did a lot of little things like checking CLT's tires for correct air pressure and exercising my hydraulic levelers. For dinner, he cooked a ham steak on the grill, while Linda prepared some salads. Then it was TV again until bedtime.

Like I said, a slow day.

I have no idea what will happen today. A lot will depend on the weather. The forecasters on TV are saying that except for a little light rain this morning, the rain should hold off until sometime this evening.

We'll see!

A Pretty Day and Plans

Orange City, FL.
47 deg. partly cloudy, no wind.
Forecast today = high temp. 74 deg. partly sunny, E. wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

It was a pretty day here yesterday with mostly sunny skies, temps in the low 70's and light winds. Lots of people were out and about and many of them spent time sitting outside enjoying the weather.

Jim and Linda went grocery shopping at Winn Dixie and then after getting it all put away, they took naps and enjoyed the nice weather.

Oh, Jim also went up to the office and paid for the rest of our stay here. I've been on the monthly rate since we got here on the 15th of November, but being that we're leaving on the 1st of February, Heather switched me over to the Passport America rate for the last couple of weeks.

Oh, I didn't tell you we were leaving on the 1st? Well, we are, and we'll be heading down to Thonotosassa, FL to meet up with the "Illinois Bunch" at the Southern Aire RV Resort for 2 weeks. Thonotosassa is over by Tampa and is just a little North of the Tampa Camping World store. Then, after that, we'll come back up I-4 to Lakeland to see my mechanic and get my annual maintenance and a few other repairs done.

Jim still hasn't heard from Dave. We're hoping he had a good trip back up to Illinois, and that he and Dee Dee will be able to back down to Southern Aire by the time we get there.

We're Gaining On It

Orange City, FL.
38 deg. clear, N wind @ 8mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 70 deg. partly cloudy, E wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

We're gaining on it. What are you gaining on, you ask? Why the weather of course. Last night was the first time in a long time that the temperature didn't drop down below the freezing mark, and they just said on the TV that today will be the first time since the first of the year that the temperature will be within 5 degrees of the normal high, which is about 72 degrees for this time of the year. :-)

In fact, they're even forecasting temperatures in the upper 70's by Saturday!

Jim did some stuff outside yesterday. One of the first things he did was to pull out my main awning, get out the lawn chairs and sit outside. He didn't spend too much time sitting out there as it was still pretty cool, but he said it sure felt good to get out for awhile. He also sorted out some more basement stuff and got out the water hoses and filter and hooked me back up to city water. (He had drained and stored the hoses and filters because they would have frozen in the cold weather we had).

In the afternoon, Jim took a nap, and while he was sleeping, Laura and Ashley stopped by to visit for awhile. They were able to stay for a couple of hours. Then, shortly after they left, Jim and Linda got ready and headed over to the Pier 16 Restaurant for dinner. Jim had flounder and Linda had white fish, and they both said their meals were really good.

The evening was spent doing the normal things like watching TV, playing games on the computers, working on the family tree program, and surfing the Internet.

Warming Up, Another Problem, and There Ain't No 10's

Orange City, FL.
30 deg. clear, N wind @ 8 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 60 deg. sunny, N wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

Finally!!!! We're finally supposed to have temperatures in the 60's today, and with the light winds that are fore-casted, it should be pretty nice outside. Maybe it'll even be warm enough to open some of my windows to air me out a little.

Well, now there is a different problem down here in Florida. You might have heard about it on the news. You see, when it is as cold as it has been, the farmers use water to try to keep their crops from freezing. Well, with all the freezing temperatures we've had, they have used a lot of water, and that appears to have lowered the water table under the ground. When that happens, air pockets develop underground and if the ground above the air pocket isn't strong enough, it drops down into the pocket causing a "sink hole". The sink holes can be huge and at times the ground will drop as much as 50 feet! Of course anything on top of that ground drops too. Things like trees, houses, roads and whatever else happens to be there.

Right now, there's a huge sink hole down near Frostproof Fl that is about 1/2 the size of a football field and is threatening to swallow up a couple of houses. And, there are at least 2 more smaller ones that have swallowed up sections of road. If it's like I've seen before, more sink holes will develop before the water table comes back up to normal.

All of this brings me to the conclusion that "there ain't no 10's" when it comes to places to be. Yeah, Florida is usually nice in the winter with lots of sunshine and warm weather, but this year, it's been unusually cold and now there is the sink hole problem.

I think it was last year, that everyone was complaining about the cold weather that they had in the Southwest. Also you have to deal with dust storms from time to time out there.

Now, I'm not knocking any part of the country. What I'm trying to say is that no matter where you are, there are times when the weather or other conditions are not the best. The tourist departments of all the states try to make you believe that their state is the best. They show photos of sunny skies, beautiful beaches, or beautiful desert landscapes, and try to convince you that it's always like that. Well, folks, it isn't! Sometimes it's just plain nasty or other things happen that make you wish you were in a different part of the country.

Don't worry though. the weather will change and conditions will get better. And, if it gets too bad, and your house has wheels like I have, you can always move!! ;-)

Just remember..........There ain't no 10's!!!

Did you know that it was on this date in 1920 that Wyatt Earp died, in Los Angeles, CA?

More Record Lows

Orange, City, FL.
25 deg. clear, NW wind @ 10 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 58 deg. mostly sunny, W wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

Nothing much to write about except the weather. We're still setting records for low overnight temperatures down here. Some people were out and about yesterday, and if you were in the sun and out of the wind, it wasn't too bad, but with a high temp. of 54 deg., and 10 to 15 mph winds, it felt really cool when you were in the shade. It's supposed to warm up as the week goes on, so everyone is trying to patiently wait it out.

I don't know of any plans for today. I think Laura is off work so maybe we'll hear from her if she's not too busy. Jim and Linda could use a few grocery items, so maybe they'll go and get them.

We'll see.

Positive Thinking and Sad News

Orange City, FL.
24 deg. clear, NW wind @ 8 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 56 deg. sunny, NW wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

Whew!!! It sure is hot down here in sunny Florida!!! I'll bet Jim will want to put my awning out sit out on the patio to keep cool!! Oh, and they'll probably be running both of my air conditioners too. It sure would be nice if it cools down a little!!

OK! OK! It's not hot here and there will be no air conditioners running today, but I thought I'd try some "positive thinking" to see if that would help the weather situation down here!

I don't think it's working.

On a serious note. Jim got an e-mail from Dave yesterday, and learned that Dee Dee's mother has passed away. She was 90 years old, so she had a long life.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dee Dee and her family.

Dave will be driving his truck up to Illinois today to be with Dee Dee. I hope the weather holds and he has a safe trip. The roads can get pretty nasty up there this time of year. Travel safe, Dave.

Nothing much happened here yesterday. It was too cold to do much outside. Jim and Linda both seemed to be feeling better, but were careful about what they ate. Both of them fooled around with the computers and watched TV for most of the day. Jim did go outside for a little while, but didn't stay out too long.

It's COLD

Frozen Orange City, FL.
23 deg. cold, partly cloudy, cold, NW cold wind @ 9 mph, cold.
Forecast today = cold, high temp. 47 deg. cold, mostly sunny, cold, NW wind at 10 to 15 mph. cold.

OK, first things first! Yesterday in the "Did you know", I wrote that they had lost "tune capsules" and of course it should have been "time capsules". My deepest apologies, I hope the error didn't cause anyone any severe frustrations. Thanks Dave. ;-)

Now back to today. It's COLD!!!!!! No one who lives down here is prepared for these cold temperatures and to be honest, in some cases the situation for these folks is getting serious. Their houses are not made for the cold, and they don't have heavy enough clothes to wear either. Their heating systems can't keep up, and in some cases, the heat has gone out completely. 2 days ago, when Laura was here, she was telling Jim and Linda that Ashley, (who works at Home Depot) said that there was not one space heater available at any of the stores in Florida. (They've probably gotten some in by now). They're forecasting one more night of very low temperatures and then it is supposed to warm up little by little as the week goes on.

OH, and I almost forgot, yesterday, we had sleet here in Orange City, and some places down here they had snow!!!!

Jim and Linda are keeping nice and warm inside of me, but they haven't been feeling too well. In fact last night, Linda got sick to her stomach. She seems to be doing OK now, so whatever this is, it doesn't seem to be too serious. Jim hasn't felt too good either, and has been very careful of what he has been eating.

As for plans for today, there aren't any!! With the cold temperatures that are fore casted, along with the winds, I doubt if hardly anyone will be out and about. Hopefully in a few days it'll get warmer.

Did you know that is so cold down here that they took down the sign that said "Water Park", and put up one that said, "Luge Run"!! ;-)

Snow And Sleet In Florida?

Orange City, FL.
35 deg. cloudy, NW wind @ 12 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 43 deg. cloudy, periods of snow and sleet this morning. NW wind @ 10 to 15 mph. Temperatures falling to 26 degrees tonight.

Yep, you read it right, snow and sleet in Florida!!!! I don't know if we'll have any right here in Orange City, but they are having some just North of here!! I've been watching the radar, and it looks like there's some heading this way!!

Oh goody, goody, just what I wanted!!!! Snow and sleet on my roof!!!

Jim took CLT and headed over to Winn Dixie yesterday morning to get some bread. They were forecasting rain, and sure enough, just after he got back, light rain started and it lasted for most of the afternoon. About 3:00 Laura called and wanted to know if Jim and Linda would be interested in meeting her and Lindsey at a restaurant for dinner. It was decided that they would meet at Bob Evans about 5:00. So.... about 4:45 CLT took them over there, and they had a good meal and a lot of great conversation.

Jim and Linda always really enjoy going out to eat with Laura and Lindsey.

Oh, I've forgotten to tell you about Dee Dee's mother. A few days ago, they sent her home from the hospital, and that very night, she had another heart attack, so she's now back in the hospital again!

Our thoughts and prayers go to Dee Dee and her mom.

A Power Outage, Reorganizing CLT, and Dumpster Diving

Orange City, FL.
26 deg. clear, NW wind @ 5 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 58 deg. sunny, light westerly winds.

Another night with below freezing temperatures. :-( I'm getting tired of all this cold weather. It's just not supposed to be this cold for this long in central Florida!! I know I shouldn't complain, but it's really starting to get to me!! Yeah, I know it's been cold almost everywhere. I heard on the TV yesterday that they were having temperatures well below zero in South Dakota with wind chill temperatures at about -45 degrees!!!! Now, that's really cold!!!!

Not much happened around here yesterday. Jim went to the Post Office and bought some stamps.

Orange City, FL.
41 deg. clear, S. wind @ 6 MPH.
Forecast today = high temp. 52 deg. becoming mostly cloudy, with periods of rain. W. wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

Now, that was inconvenient!!! Just as I was typing yesterday's blog and the power went out!! Of course the first thing I did was to switch to battery power and keep some of the 120 volt things running with my inverter. The thing was, I didn't know if the power outage was just at my electrical box or if the power was out to the park. So........ after a little while, Jim went out and checked the circuit breakers on my site's post just to make sure.

Well, the breakers were OK, so Jim came back in and started turning off unneeded electrical items. One of the first things he shut off was his coffee pot, as it uses a lot of electricity, and would put a heavy load on my batteries.

Well, anyway, to make a long story short, the power came back on after about 40 minutes and everything returned to normal.

Now, I know I could have continued my posting on this laptop computer, on battery power, but I didn't, and by the time the power came back on, I didn't feel like it any more. So.... I'll have to back up a little and catch up.

Oh well!!!

After Jim came back from the Post Office, nothing much happened here, and the rest of the day was pretty much normal, with TV watching, leftover chicken and rice casserole for dinner, and then more TV until bedtime.

Yesterday, after the power outage, and it warmed up some, Jim decided to reorganize CLT's truck bed. The first thing he did was to pretty much unload everything and start repacking and eliminating items that were not wanted. By the time he got done, he had a fairly large pile of boxes and junk laying on the ground. At the same time, he also ran my generator for about half an hour to exercise it. (I think the power outage in the morning got him thinking about it), ;-)

While he was doing all of that, Laura came over and picked up Linda and they went out to lunch at Chili's and then went to check out a "used book store" that had just opened in the area. Linda bought a couple of books, (at half price), and in a couple of hours, she and Laura were back here again.

I think they both had fun.

While they were gone, Jim took the junk from the back of CLT and the garbage from my garbage cans, and headed over to he dumpster. While putting the junk in the dumpster, he notice a piece of blue carpeting laying along side of the dumpster. Well, it looked to be in pretty good shape, so he loaded it into the back of CLT and brought it back here. One back here, he unrolled it on the patio and determined that a good portion of it could be used to make runners to go over my light colored carpeting.

You see, the runners that I had were getting pretty shabby and were in need of replacement.

Anyway, Jim got out his utility knife and went to work. In a short time, he had new runners cut out of the piece of carpeting and was loading the remainder of the piece back into CLT to take it back to the dumpster.

While Jim was cutting out the runners, Linda and Laura came back, and Laura asked where he had got the carpeting. He said that he had been "dumpster diving" again, and everyone had a good laugh. :-)

Actually, that's not too funny. Jim has found quite a few items at the dumpster. A few things that I can remember, are a 12 volt air compressor, an electric space heater, a tote box, and a garden hose. All of these items either worked or just needed minor repairs and a good cleaning.

For dinner, Linda heated up some left-over pizza. Then, she and Jim watched TV until bedtime.

Christmas Decorations, and An Update On Dee Dee's Mother

Orange Popsicle, FL.
27 deg. clear, NW wind @ 8 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 53 deg. sunny, NW wind @ 10 to 15 mph.

Would you believe it's warmer in Denver CO. and Salt Lake City, UT than it is here in central Florida? Yep, you read that right!!! And, the temperatures we are having right now are setting new record lows in some places across the state!!!

Brrrrr!!!!!

Jim got the tote boxes that he uses to store the Christmas decorations in, out of my basement yesterday morning and by a little after noon, he and Linda had taken everything down, and he had put the totes back. I kind of like it when I'm all decorated for Christmas, but it was time to put them away for another 10 months or so.

On and different note..... Yesterday, Jim got an e-mail from Dave, (you remember I told you about the bad Christmas that they had?), and he's down here in Florida now, but Dee Dee is still up in Illinois with her mother. Her mother is doing better and they are expecting her to be able to come home from the hospital soon. If everything goes well, Dee Dee will stay up there for a couple of weeks, and then rent a car and join Dave down here.

I hope everything goes well and Dee Dee will be able to come down here and join Dave.

For dinner last night, Jim and Linda took CLT and went to Steak 'n Shake. It had been awhile since they had been there, and besides, someone given them a gift card for Christmas, so they ate for free! :-)

After they got back here they played games ON the computers and looked stuff up ON the computers and then watched TV until bedtime.

Did you know that the coldest temperature ever recorded in Florida was -2 degrees? It was at Tallahassee during February of 1899.

Happy Dave? ;-)

We Lucked Out, Outside Decorations, and More Cold

Orange City, FL.
33 deg. mostly cloudy, NW wind @ 9 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 50 deg. mostly sunny, NW wind @ 10 to 15 mph.

We lucked out last night because some clouds developed and that stopped the temperature from dropping as low as were fore-casted. But.....the weather people are saying that tonight, that's not going to happen and the temps are really going to drop down into the 20's.

Brrrrrr!!! I hope they're wrong again!!!!

Jim didn't do a whole lot yesterday. He said he was feeling OK, but just didn't have much energy. He went to the office and picked up the mail, and then when he came back, he removed my outside Christmas decorations. After that, he took a long nap and then watched TV and played with the computer.

Linda worked on her family tree program, (looking up ancestors on the Internet and then putting the information in her program), and also added some recipes to her recipe database. Then for dinner she put together a chicken/rice casserole that she and Jim both thought was very good.

The evening was spent with Jim watching TV and Linda doing some more ancestry research on the computer, and then watching some TV with Jim.

Whoa!!!! The weather gal on the TV just said that she's expecting it to stay very cold for the next 8 days!!!!!! She's also forecasting record cold for tonight and then again, later on this week!!!!

Brrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you know that is so cold that in a recent poll, 92% of Florida inhabitants no longer consider Global Warming to be a bad thing? ;-)

Freezing Temperatures In Florida and A Bug?

Orange City, FL.
33 deg. clear, no wind.
Forecast today = high temp. 52 deg. clear, NW wind @ 5 to 10 mph.

Brrrrrrr!!!!! I know it's not as cold here as it is in many parts of the country, but when it gets around the freezing temperature in central Florida, it's cold!!!!

Not much happening to write about around here again. Saturday, Jim and Linda went to Winn-Dixie and bought some groceries. Yesterday, Jim wasn't feeling too well. He either ate something that didn't agree with him or he picked up a "bug" someplace, cause his stomach was churning. In fact, it woke him up in the middle of the night and was up for awhile.

By late afternoon, when Laura called to tell Linda that she was out shopping and would like to stop by, he was feeling quite a bit better and so Linda said that she could come on over if she wasn't worried about catching what Jim had.

Well, she stopped by for about an hour, and Jim was careful not to breathe on her, ;-) so hopefully she didn't pick up Jim's "bug". (That is if he even had one).

I doubt if there's going to be much going on around here today. Jim was saying last night, that he wants to get my Christmas decorations taken down and put away, but we'll have wait and see how he feels.

Did you know that it was so cold here yesterday that the politicians had their hands in their OWN pockets? ;-0

The Weather and $3 Per Day

Orange City, FL.
41 deg. clear, NW wind @ 10 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 58 deg. sunny, NW wind @ 15 to 20 mph.

About the biggest thing that happened around here yesterday was the weather. It rained heavily at times during the morning, and then all of a sudden, the wind switched directions and the temperatures started dropping. In less than an hour, the temperature dropped 11 degrees!! Then, just before sundown, the sun finally came out, but by that time, it was too late to warm anything up. For the next 5 days, the high temperature is only expected to be in the 50's and the lows in the high 20's or low 30's.

Folks, for Florida, that's COLD!!!!

Oh, kind of on the same line, I wanted to tell you what my electric bill was for December. I don't know what the cost is per KWH, but I my cost averaged almost exactly $3 a day. Now, let me explain what that electricity is being used for.

First of all, Jim and Linda have been running my 2 built-in electric heaters whenever they have felt cool. They have not tried to conserve much at all on the heat, and have used them frequently. And, when it has gotten hot inside of me, they have run one or both of my air conditioners as needed to stay comfortable. Second, my water heater is running on electricity, and has not been turned off or switched to propane since we've been here. Third, my refrigerator has been running on electricity the whole time, and has only been on propane once when the power went out for about an hour. Fourth, there have been quite a few loads of laundry done in my washer/dryer during the 31 day period of time, and finally, Fifth, Jim and Linda have used lights or any other electric appliances whenever they wanted to, and the Christmas decorations were lit many days, and almost all evenings for the entire time period.

Now, Jim and Linda don't waste electricity. They turn off all lights and appliances when not needed, but they did not really try to conserve during this period either. So... I don't think $3 per day was really too bad.

OK, now I can hear some of you asking, "Why is he telling me all of this?" Well, I know that some of the people who read this Blog are just getting into, or planning on getting into, this full-timing lifestyle and are wondering about the costs of living in an RV. So, I'm hoping this may help them a little.

Oh, and there's one more reason I'm telling you this. Some people think that RVs are energy hogs. Well, I may use a lot of fuel when I travel down the road, but I'm betting that most people can't heat/cool their homes and run everything else they need in their stix and brix houses for $3 worth of energy per day!

Did you know that beer is made by fermentation caused by bacteria feeding on yeast cells and then defecating. In other words, it's a nice tall glass of poo!!

Anyone care for a drink? ;-)

Happy New Year

Orange City, FL.
64 deg. rain, S. wind @ 5 mph.
Forecast today = high temp. 64 deg. with falling temperatures, cloudy with rain and t-storms, winds becoming NW @ 15 to 20 mph with 30mph gusts.

Happy New Year!!!!!

I hope all of you had a great and safe New Year's eve. It was pretty quiet around here. There were a few people celebrating by shooting off fireworks, but that's all. Jim and Linda watched some old movies on TCM and then switched over to see the big count-down in New York City.

Soon after midnight, they went to bed.

Jim did some reorganization of my basement compartments yesterday. He still has more to do, but at least he got a start on it. Then for dinner, he cooked a nice big, juicy steak on the grill while Linda prepared and cooked some peas and potatoes inside.

Again, it sure all smelled good, and from Jim and Linda's reactions while they were eating it, it must have tasted real good too. :-)

Did you know that the popular New Year's Eve song, "Auld Lang syne" translates to "old long ago?

Have a great year! ;-)
