A Man In A White Truck, and The Dented Can Store

Quartzsite, AZ
46 deg. clear, calm
Forecast today = high temp. 83 deg. clear, N. winds @ 5 mph.

A Ranger in a white pick-up truck came to see us yesterday. He said that Jim needed to get me a permit, and he could get it at the first RV, out by the main road, (Rt. 95). He said that there wasn't a charge, and the only reason for the permit was to stop people from staying in this area for more than 14 days. You see, if you want to stay more than 14 days, you need to go to a different area, (which is South of Quartzsite), and pay a small fee. Then, you can stay the whole winter, if you want to. Well, Jim and Linda wanted to go into town anyway, to pick up a few things and take their garbage to the the waste transfer station, so on the way, they stopped and picked up the permit

No problems, no hassle, and friendly work camping RVers handing them out.

About 1/2 way into town, they have what they call a "waste transfer station", where everyone who is staying out here in the desert, takes their garbage. By having a place like that, they don't have to try to drive all around in the desert with garbage trucks. All of the people who camp here seem to be OK with that, because you don't seen any trash anywhere in these areas.

In town, Jim and Linda went to a grocery surplus store, where they have all kinds of boxed and canned goods. A lot of the boxes are banged up, and some of the cans have dents in them, but they sure have good prices. About 1/2 of what you pay in a regular grocery store. Of course they don't have everything you might want, but Jim and Linda found quite a few items, and had fun doing it.

That's about all that happened around here yesterday. Today is our last full day here in the desert. This has been a really neat experience, and I hope we can do it, or something like it again. An RV could get hooked on this boon-docking thing. ;-)

Did you know that Quartzsite is the burial place for Hi Jolly, (Hadji Ali), a Syrian camel driver that took part in the experimental U S Camel Corps, back in the mid nineteenth century?
